Another LFS leader shot dead in Bicol
A few months after the murder of Cris Hugo, a National Council member of the League of Filipino Students (LFS) in Bicol, another LFS member was shot dead in Bulan, Sorsogon today.
Rie Mon "Ambo" Guran, a 21 year-old student from Aquinas University was shot dead this morning at around 6 a.m. He was a 4th year Political Science student and was the LFS spokesperson for Aquinas.
Guran was shot in a bus terminal in Bulan, Sorsogon as he was on his way to his school in Legazpi. A lone gunman, with companions, boarded the same bus he was on and killed him. He acquired 4 gunshot wounds, 1 in the head and 3 in the body.
Guran celebrated his 21st birthday yesterday.
Guran's killing also came a month after the abduction of 2 UP students, Karen Empeno and Sherlyn Cadapan, in Bulacan, both LFS members.
"We are very upset and very much outraged by this recent murder. We are holding President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo directly responsible for this killing as it happened a week after she praised Gen. Jovito Palparan's criminal acts in her SONA," said Vencer Crisostomo, LFS National Chairperson.
Crisostomo said Guran's killing shows that Arroyo's "vague" condemnation of political killings during her SONA last week "was only meant for PR".
"This proves the farcical nature of Arroyo's 'condemnation' of political killings: nothing is actually done to stop the murders and instead, murderers like Palparan are being honored. The implementation of her 'all-out war' and 'Oplan Bantay Laya' continue, targeting unarmed civilians and activists," said Crisostomo.
Crisostomo called on students to conduct "nationwide walk-outs and boycott protests" in response to the Guran's killing. "We have to stop this fascist rampage of the Arroyo regime. We cannot allow cold-blooded assasinations like this to continue targeting the youth of our nation. We will do every means necessary to make this government pay for its crimes and to get justice for the victims of the Arroyo regime," he said.
The League of Filipino Students (LFS) is a nationwide student organization formed in 1977 as an alliance against tuition increases. It has chapters in prominent universities, colleges and high schools accross the regions. Despite repeated categorical denial by the students, the group with around 10,000 members nationwide has been tagged as "communist fronts" and "destabilizers" by the government and elements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). #

LFS-UPLB Condemns the killing of Rie Mon “Ambo” Guran
League of Filipino Students – UPLB led today’s protest and candle lighting activities at the UPLB Humanities Steps, 3 pm, adding their voice to the entire youth and Filipino masses in condemning the killing of Rie Mon “Ambo” Guran, 21, Spokesperson of the League of Filipino Students in Aquinas University.
Guran was shot by still unidentified assailants in Bulan, Sorsogon, 6am today. He is the latest victim of US-Arroyo regime’s Oplan Bantay Laya, AFP’s murderous scheme disguised as an “anti-insurgency” campaign.
A former BS Agricultural Chemistry student of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, Guran chaired the local chapter of LFS-UPLB in 2002-2003. In the same year, he also served as a member of the UPLB University Student Council Volunteer Corps.
Remembering Ambo
Mark Velasco, chairperson of LFS-UPLB recounted that he last saw Ambo when he came here to visit during last year’s February Fair. He recounted that even if Ambo had already transferred school, he continued to serve the genuine and democratic interests of the students and the Filipino people.
Velasco described Along as “Astig na lider-estudyante – masiyahin at talagang maaasahan.
“Ambo’s death will not deter the us in our aim to advance the national democratic interests of the Filipino people. We will not ceases our efforts to consolidate and expand our ranks as we struggle and expose the evils of Oplan Bantay Laya.” Velasco added.
GMA’s Killer SONA
Velasco said that “Rie Mon “Ambo” Guran is the first youth fatality of GMA’s Killer SONA. Her acknowledgement of General Palparan’s work in her speech despite Palparan’s gruesome record of human rights violations, is a death sentence to those who oppose the government. This together with her 1B “counter-insurgency” program only legitimizes political killings which include the youth as targets.”
“GMA's SONA which promotes development through the creation of “superregions’ is a farce. Her all out war policy against CPP-NPA-NDF has instead resulted to the creation of “killerregions” due to upsurge of military operations in regions like Southern Tagalog and Central Luzon. Instead of propping up military funds, the government should rechannel it to education and social services. She even brandishes cha-cha as a solution to poverty but it will only worsen the current state of the country by eliminating what’s left of our national patrimony in exchange to further dependence on foreign capitalists. This will only lead to further state abandonment of education. In UP, for instance, the UP Admin is now proposing for a P1,000 increase per unit due to meager budget.” Velasco added. ###

is my baby now looking for a papa?
well, it seems so.
yesterday, we were playing in our room. i was trying to take pictures. haha. wala lang. trip lang. and then i asked sky, "sabi ka, 'mama'". he looked at me and said, "papa."
of course, i laughed. i told him, "sabi ko, sabihin mo 'mama'." but he again said, "papa." while he continued on playing.
hala. patay tayo niyan.
after thirty minutes to an hour, we went out and i set him on the crib. his ninong ed and ninang julie where there. sky started crying when he was put down on the crib. of course, that's his new trick so that people would always carry him.
tito ed went to sky and tried to coax my baby to go with him for kakargahin nga siya ng ninong ed niya. but then he cried out, "papa." tita julie and ninong ed laughed while saying, "tatao naman." (he now knows.)
maybe. i dunno.
anyhow, this morning, our helper, tiya amy, was walking by where sky was playing. and when she did, sky said, "papa." and then kate said, "amy. hindi papa." but kept on saying papa over and over again.
hay.... no comment.
by the way, pics are here. taken just yesterday.
